Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to wait a while after a death before ordering a memorial?
No, you can order a memorial right away. It usually takes 1 to 6 months to make and deliver, but most cemeteries will be ready with the ground and foundation long before that.
Do I need a memorial if I choose cremation?
No, it’s up to you whether or not you want to mark the spot. However, we recommend a memorial for comfort and to help future generations find family information.
Do all cemeteries allow the same types of memorials?
No, each cemetery has its own rules. Some cemeteries might even have different rules for different areas. It’s a good idea to check with the cemetery or a monument company like ours to make sure your memorial fits the rules.
How long does it take to get a memorial?
If we use stock materials, your memorial should be ready in about 6 to 8 weeks after you approve the design. Custom memorials can take 3 to 6 months, depending on the materials and other factors.
Why should I buy a memorial in advance?
It’s easier to make decisions before a loved one passes, and you can choose exactly how you want to be remembered. Plus, it can take the pressure off during a difficult time.
What is the best material for a memorial?
Most memorials are made from granite, marble, or bronze. Granite is the best choice because it lasts longer and offers more design options.
Who installs my memorial?
We usually install the memorials we make. But some cemeteries require their own installers, in which case, we will deliver it to the cemetery.
How long will a memorial last?
Granite memorials can last for centuries, while marble may break down more quickly. It depends on the material.
How much does a memorial cost?
Prices vary based on size, material, design, and extra items like vases or photos. We’ll be happy to give you a price once we know what you need.
What’s the difference between granite and marble?
Marble breaks down faster over time, especially outdoors. Granite is stronger and lasts much longer without much wear.
How are designs and carvings added to the stone?
You can visit our Information Center for details on how designs are carved into the stone.
Can I get a special design on the memorial?
Yes! We can create any custom design you want.
Should I use the full date (month, day, year) or just the year?
It’s up to you. Using the full date gives more complete information for future generations, but it’s your choice.
If I have a problem at the cemetery, who should I contact?
If the issue is with the memorial, call us first. If it’s another problem, and you can’t get help from the cemetery, you can contact the State of Michigan’s Cemetery Commissioner.
